NEWS: Who is behind 'The Standard'?

National Party Deputy Leader Bill English says if Labour knows who is behind 'The Standard' then it should say so.

"Bloggers have discovered the anti-National/pro-Government website is using an internet protocol address owned by the Labour Party.  Previously, pseudonym-using contributors have repeatedly tried to distance themselves from the Labour Party.

"Now, in what the blogosphere is calling a 'gotcha', we know that Labour is actively supporting this campaigning web-site in election year.

"At the very least, Labour knows who these people are.  In the interests of openness and transparency, Labour should make its support public."

Mr English says the public should be allowed to know how close the relationship is between the 'independent' website and the Government.

"The website appears to be a covert third-party campaign, run on the internet with Labour's full knowledge and participation.

"Given Labour has passed its anti-democratic Electoral Finance Act, to stop this sort of activity they may have some explaining to do.

"If Labour is hosting this website, it could be that the site's expenses qualify as election advertising.  That may be in breach of the law, given the absence of a proper authorisation statement.

"If Labour knows who is behind 'The Standard', and if there's nothing to hide, it should be more open about the nature of the relationship."

Well done for highlighting this serious issue Bill, as I am appalled that Labour are possibly financing this blog, because the public has a right to know. National does not finance kiwiblog and I can think of one million more important things that the taxpayers dollars could prop out and support. It is shameful that the incumbent government wasted $47 million on spin-doctors, while people are dying on hospital waiting lists. Why not try getting some real doctors to help sick people? This government does not address the soaring infanticide and child abuse statistic’s, but can waste money on meaningless web sites, propaganda sledging on blogosphere and pathetic spin doctors. The mere thought of the Labour plebs at home or work growing metaphorically hungry from misgovernment makes my blood boil. This Labour government is off their bloody rockers and has lost the plot completely. Well done for bringing this into the public arena.

If Bill wants to find out who is 'behind' The Standard, then he should use the system set up for exactly that purpose. whois has been around the net as long as I've known it. But in case he is as illiterate about the net as his press release seems to indicate - here is a link to find out where he can find out. http://lookup.domainz.net.nz/whois/?domain=thestandard.org.nz Bill will find my contact details listed there
